Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr. Jackie Macie, has applauded the police in the province under the leadership of SAPS Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi for the arrest of two suspects who were found in possession of dagga worth R1,2 million.
The two were arrested on R538 Road near Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) in a Toyota Quantum. They were apprehended by the White River Flying Squad Unit during their routine patrols.
Macie appreciated the hardwork that police continue to display to curb crime in the province.
He appealed to the police to thoroughly investigate the case so that the perpetrators and the suppliers are brought to book. He said that their conviction will send a strong message to other dealers that their time is over.
“We have seen the negative and destruction brought by drugs or dagga in many communities. Most of this dagga is sold at schools and those who use it are either in gangs or disruptive and disrespectful towards teachers.
“We cannot sit back and allow selfish people to destroy the future of our country. These people are only interested in making money at the expense of young people.
We must support the police in their endeavours and report everyone who sells dagga,” the MEC said.
Meanwhile, the MEC condemned the incident where 51 Putco buses were torched.
“While the police investigate this incident, we call upon members of the community who might have information to come forward and assist the police put the suspects behind bars.
“I am confident that the police will work around the clock to bring the suspects to book,” he said.
