Machadodorp violent protest, 10 suspects arrested

Following the recent spate of violent protests which erupted at Machadodorp last week, ten people were subsequently arrested, six on Friday and four on 17 September 2018.

The arrests follow police investigations after community members stormed the local police station on Tuesday morning, 11 September 2018, and obstructed their way. In the process, they looted and torched a local shop. They further barricaded the road and burnt a total of three trucks as well as the provincial traffic offices in the area.

All the commotion started after two men from a local security company, Bruce Botha aged 29 and Wayne Swart aged 20, allegedly assaulted a community member on Monday, 10 September 2018, an incident captured on video which has gone viral on social media.

It seems that the problem started when the victim had a fight with another man employed by a local businessman (whose shop was later burnt) who alerted the security company, hence the [alleged] assault. Botha and Swart were arrested on Tuesday, 11 September 2018, and released on R500 bail each by the Belfast Magistrate’s during their appearance last Friday.

The first six suspects, Pricilla Maelane aged 26, Donald Mafika aged 26, John Thela aged 52, Khomotso Chiloane aged 33, Sipho Bholosha aged 18 and Khanyi Ceza aged 42, appeared at the Belfast Magistrate’s Court on 17 September 2018.

They were granted R300 bail each and ordered to reappear on 03 October 2018. The remaining four suspects will also appear at the same court soon, pending further investigation.
