Frustrated community members living near the power station have staged protests in Emalahleni demanding job opportunities and better engagement from Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned power utility. Demonstrators gathered outside the facility, accusing Eskom of failing to address unemployment among local youth and neglecting community consultations.
Community Demands and Eskom’s Response
Protesters claim that Eskom has not held meetings with the Stakeholder Engagement Forum, leaving many young people without employment. “Eskom is not coming to the table to talk to the communities. Young people remain unemployed, and the forum meant to address these issues doesn’t function,” said one demonstrator.
However, Eskom has attributed the protests to misinformation circulating on social media regarding job openings. The utility warned that false claims have led people to submit CVs at power stations, disrupting operations.
Daphney Mokwena, Eskom’s spokesperson, stated: “These false claims not only disrupt power generation but are also criminal in nature.” She urged communities to rely on official channels for job announcements and discouraged public visits to Eskom offices for employment applications.
Violent Protests and Arrests
The demonstrations have occasionally turned violent, leading to arrests. Last week, 10 suspects were detained at a power station for public violence and property damage. Police have warned against unlawful protests, emphasizing that while community grievances are understood, violence and destruction will not be tolerated.
The arrested individuals appeared in court and were released on warning pending further investigations.
Eskom’s Call for Calm
Eskom has assured communities that when hiring begins, notifications will be sent through established stakeholder structures. Mokwena reiterated: “We advise the public to wait for official announcements rather than approaching power stations directly.”
As tensions persist, authorities and Eskom are urging peaceful dialogue to resolve the ongoing dispute.
