KOMATIPOORT – A Komatipoort police shootout on Thursday, 27 August 2026, left one suspect dead and another critically injured after members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Tracing Team engaged armed fugitives wanted for murder and armed robbery. The tactical operation also yielded the arrest of two additional individuals and the seizure of two unlicensed firearms.

The confrontation originated from actionable intelligence regarding individuals actively sought for assault, armed robbery, and murder. Acting on this information, the Tracing Team intercepted a suspicious VW Polo departing from the Komatipoort area. When officers signaled the vehicle to halt, the driver ignored the command and accelerated. The situation escalated rapidly when occupants of the fleeing vehicle discharged firearms at the pursuing officers, triggering a defensive shootout.

During the exchange of gunfire, one suspect sustained fatal injuries. A second individual suffered severe wounds and was subsequently transported to the Medical Care Centre, where they are being held under strict police guard. Authorities also took two uninjured suspects—a male and a female—into custody. At the scene, law enforcement recovered two unlicensed firearms suspected to have been utilized during the armed confrontation.

Detectives are now investigating potential links between these suspects and other recent violent crimes in the region, notably a fatal farm attack on 23 August 2026 in Komatipoort that resulted in the shooting death of a security guard.

In line with statutory procedures, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has initiated an inquiry into the fatal shooting of the suspect by law enforcement. Simultaneously, the surviving suspects face active investigations for the attempted murder of police officers and unlawful possession of firearms, with authorities indicating that further charges may be instituted as the probe advances.

Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, publicly commended the officers for their decisive response and dedication to community safety.

“We are not going to tolerate lawlessness in this province,” Lieutenant General Modise stated. “The swift action by our Tracing Team, which led to this confrontation with armed and dangerous suspects of murder and armed robbery, will probably send a clear message that we will hunt down perpetrators of crime from their hiding places. Our members came under fire and they responded to protect the lives of community members.”
