The South African Police Service (SAPS), in collaboration with local security companies, Farm Watch members, and other law enforcement stakeholders, conducted a coordinated joint operation targeting illegal mining activities in the Pilgrim’s Rest area on Saturday, 23 May 2026.

The operation resulted in the arrest of 17 suspects, ranging in age from 19 to 53 years. All individuals were detained on charges directly linked to illicit mining operations.

According to SAPS, the suspects face multiple charges, including contraventions of the Immigration Act of South Africa, unlawful possession of gold-bearing material (GBM), and possession of gold-bearing equipment (GBE). The arrested individuals are scheduled to appear before the Pilgrim’s Rest Periodical Court in the near future.

The joint operation underscores the continued commitment of law enforcement and community safety structures to combat illegal mining, a persistent challenge in the region that fuels organized crime, environmental degradation, and economic loss.

In a statement following the operation, the South African Police Service expressed appreciation for the ongoing support and cooperation from community safety structures and private security stakeholders. SAPS emphasized that such collaborative efforts remain critical to disrupting illegal mining networks and related criminal activities in the Pilgrim’s Rest area and beyond.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have urged community members to continue reporting suspicious activities to support sustained law enforcement efforts.
