The integrated approach styled Operation Safer Festive Season incorporating all other operations like Fiela and Thunderstorm under one umbrella, has managed to scoop a total of 48 firearms and 676 rounds of ammunition since its inception late last year until now.
The firearms, 31 revolvers/pistols, 12 rifles 01 shotgun and 4 self made firearms were seized by dedicated teams working as a collective throughout the province.
The bulk of the firearms are those that were once legal in that they were in the possession of licenced owners but somehow slipped into the hands of criminals, who do not hesitate to shoot at people wounding and killing them for no apparent reason.
Firearms are by nature deadly and highly sought after by criminals, hence firearm owners are once again reminded and pleaded with to take good care of them. People must seize to take firearms to places of entertainment like taverns and night clubs as that is not only illegal but also puts one’s life in danger.
In a nutshell firearm owners are reminded to practice responsible firearm ownership at all time. An appeal is made to everyone to report people who use firearms to shoot at random.
Anyone may report to their nearest police station or anonymously to the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111
The Provincial Commissioner of police in the province, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma was ecstatic over the huge number of firearms recovered.
“It is a well known fact that the proliferation of firearms makes life difficult for ordinary men and women in society, the dedicated men and women in blue are striving to ensure that no firearm remains in the hands of villains by recovering and confiscating these firearms”, said the General.
