A 37-year-old male suspect has been arrested in Graskop on Sunday, 18 June 2023 for possession of unlicensed firearm, assault and attempted house robbery.

According to information, it is alleged that a woman accompanied her friend who had visited her earlier that day.

As she returned home, she met her assailants, two armed men who held her at gunpoint.

She the screamed for help and fellow community members, including local security personnel came to her rescue. A suspect was caught red handed in possession of a firearm.

The other suspect fled the scene in an attempt to evade arrest.

Police in Graskop were called to the scene and the firearm was confiscated and the suspect charged accordingly, hence his appearance today, 19 June 2023, at Graskop Magistrate’s Court.

Police investigation continues with the hope to put the other suspect behind bars soon.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has commended community members for informing police after the suspect was apprehended. “This shows a good relationship that we admire between ourselves and the community instead of people resorting to mob justice. The latter is often witnessed from time to time however we urge our citizens to refrain from it” said the General.
