Incidents in which hijackers in Mpumalanga use police uniform to commit crime are on the rise and so, the FF Plus has requested the provincial MEC for Community Safety, Vusi Shongwe, to investigate how these criminals were able to gain access to police uniforms and other police equipment.

Finding out what is going on and why this has been allowed to become a trend should be the police’s first priority.

In the most recent incident, the professional sport shooter Nicolaas Devenish, paid with his life during a hijacking attempt near Delmas last Saturday.

According to media reports, the attackers were wearing police jackets and police masks. There were reportedly also blue lights, similar to those that the police use, mounted on the hijackers’ car.

The deceased shot and killed two of his attackers, but was also fatally wounded.

This is just the most recent in a series of similar incidents in the area in which hijackers – clothed in police uniform – attacked motorists.

It is time for the Mpumalanga government to take decisive steps to ensure the safety of the province’s people. In addition, the FF Plus is already opposing the alarming attempt by the government to strip law-abiding citizens of their firearms for the purpose of self-defence.
