Highway Patrol Unit launched in Mpumalanga

Following the increase of incidences of crime affecting tourists, commuters, hitchhikers and motorists, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Jackie Macie and SAPS Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi today (19 September 2024) launched the Highway Patrol Unit.

The launch took place on the N4 Toll Road near Matafin in Mbombela.

The Unit is expected to deal with crimes happening on national and routes such as car and truck hijackings, drug and illicit goods smuggling, human trafficking, robberies, cash in transit robberies and other crimes committed on those routes.

The Unit will also deal with the criminals who disguise as police by using blue lights on their vehicles to rob motorists.

Special vehicles were also handed over to the Unit, and they will all be fitted with Automated Number Plate Recognition(ANPR) systems. They will patrol routes such as N4, N17, N11, N12, R40, R23, and R37 to name a few….
