Hawks arrest Acornhoek optometrist for fraud

Skhumbuzo Asquith Mohlaba (45), was released on a warning by the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court on 10 July 2019, after he was arrested by members of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit on Tuesday 9 July 2019, for allegedly practising as an optometrist without a valid operating license. The case has been postponed to 28 August 2019 pending further investigation.

Mohlala continued to render services to the public of Acornhoek and surrounding areas despite that his practising license expired on 2 November 2018, which is in contravention of the Health Professions Council of South Africa Act (HPCSA).

Hawks’ investigation has further established that Mohlala issued several eye test report certificates to unqualified applicants of driving and learners license for a fee.
