The Provincial Head of the Hawks emphasized that” As the Hawks we are determined to eradicate all sorts of criminal activity which are being committed in the province.
This followed after a suspect, who had a South African Identity document with his photo attached but with someone else’s names. The suspect approached a Home Affairs official to request assistance to apply for a valid identity document as he obtained employment, and he wanted to open a bank account.
The officer told him that he knew someone who could assist. The matter was reported to the department. The immigration officer was informed and tasked. They met and agreed on the payment date.
A sting operation was authorized and executed on Monday, 28 August 2023, by the Hawks, Secunda Crime intelligence, Bethal detectives and Home Affairs. The suspect was arrested after signing the application form for id and handed over gratification amounting to R4000-00.
The Hawks are conducting the investigation. The suspect is expected to appear before the Bethal Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 29 August 2023.
