CALCUTTA, Mpumalanga — A suspected drive-by shooting in Calcutta, near Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga, has left four people dead and one critically injured, prompting a massive, intensified police investigation into the escalating violence gripping the region.

The fatal ambush occurred on Sunday evening, July 12, 2026, at approximately 8:45 PM. According to police, a vehicle carrying five occupants was targeted as it approached the gate of a residential property in the Mkhuhlu township area. Armed assailants opened fire, riddling the vehicle with bullets. Three men and one woman, aged between 19 and 30, were pronounced dead at the scene. The fifth occupant, a male, was rushed to Matuana Hospital, where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit fighting for his life.

Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga, addressed the media in the early hours of Monday, confirming the casualties and acknowledging that the official motive remains unknown. He described the attacks as “hit-and-run” incidents, noting that community intimidation has made gathering immediate eyewitness testimony difficult. However, Major General Mkhwanazi emphasized that intelligence operations are yielding promising leads. While refusing to disclose specific details that could jeopardize the investigation, he noted that police are actively exploring potential links to rhino poaching rivalries, local tender disputes, and conflicts within the taxi industry.

This latest tragedy underscores a deeply concerning trend in the region. Authorities confirmed that 37 people have now been killed in violent, drive-by incidents in the Calcutta and Mkhuhlu belt since January 2026, with 33 of those deaths occurring prior to Sunday’s attack.

In response to the escalating crisis, Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu convened an emergency meeting with the Member of the Executive Council (MEC), provincial police leadership, and municipal officials. Premier Ndlovu assured residents that authorities are closing in on a specific “person of interest” believed to be the main culprit behind the spate of violent crimes.

“We are ready to arrest this individual, and our soonest is soonest,” Premier Ndlovu stated, emphasizing that the government will not be handed over to criminals. He has given the Provincial Commissioner a strict four-day deadline to present a comprehensive progress report on the investigation.

Furthermore, Premier Ndlovu confirmed that the effort is no longer just provincial. Following discussions with the National Police Commissioner, specialized national investigators are being deployed to the area to assist local teams in securing breakthroughs.

While police have intensified their visible deployment and patrols in the area, Major General Mkhwanazi and Premier Ndlovu both stressed that community cooperation remains critical. Authorities are urging residents to come forward with any information, assuring them that highly trained, rapid-response police units are prepared to make imminent arrests without fear or favor, and that the safety of the community remains the utmost priority.
