Five suspects aged between 25 and 69 are expected to appear at the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court today, Wednesday 07 February 2024 for possession of four unlicenced rifles with ammunition.
The suspects were arrested yesterday evening, Tuesday 06 February 2024 at about 19:00. Members of Durban Harbour on deployment in Mpumalanga were busy with their normal patrol duties when they stopped a Toyota Land Cruiser with five occupants at Mananga/Coopersdal turnoff Komatipoort.
When the vehicle was searched, four rifles with ammunition were reportedly found concealed behind the seats.
The suspects were arrested on charges of possession of unlicenced firearms with ammunition after failing to produce firearm licences hence the court appearance.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has welcomed the arrest of the suspects as well as the recovery of firearms. “We applaud SAPS members for the job well done, in removing unlicenced firearms from the wrong hands so as to save lives,” said the General.
