A multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation at Mashobota farm in Schoemanskloof, Mbombela, has led to the detention of five individuals suspected of involvement in illegal gold mining. Acting on repeated intelligence tip-offs, authorities seized equipment used to process gold-bearing material and uncovered numerous deep excavation holes across the property.
While the operation successfully disrupted activity at the site, most individuals engaged in illegal mining fled before authorities arrived. A provincial law enforcement representative expressed concern that operational secrecy may have been compromised. “What concerned me is that it was an operation prepared in a short space of time, not to allow the information to go out,” the official stated. The presence of rocks deliberately placed on access roads further suggested that suspects may have received advance warning.
Authorities also highlighted internal challenges. “Crime intelligence is assisting us with information, yet within our structures there are police officers who are working with these people, giving them tip-offs about when operations are undertaken,” a police spokesperson explained.
The Mashobota farm site represents a shifting tactic in illegal mining operations within Mpumalanga. Officials noted that crime intelligence had flagged illegal activity at a location previously associated with lawful mining. “We thought these illegal miners would operate at abandoned old mines, but they have established a new site altogether,” a provincial official remarked. This development adds to existing pressures from illegal mining in other established regions across the province.
In response, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mpumalanga issued a statement affirming it would monitor the provincial government’s strategies to prevent illegal mining in nature reserves and surrounding communities.
The detained individuals and confiscated equipment remain in police custody as investigations continue into organized illicit mining networks operating in the region.
