Five men aged between 27 and 36 will appear at the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court today, in connection with a string of robberies committed in and around the Tonga Cluster area.

The five were arrested at KaMhlushwa during the day on Friday, 5 October 2018, by a joint team of various disciplines within the SAPS in the cluster.

The arrests follows shortly after a foreign national was attacked and robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash and airtime vouchers earlier on at Schoemansdal. The victim was shot several times in the body and had to be rushed to hospital for medical attention.

Police swiftly responded and launched an investigation, which in turn led them to the five suspects at their hideout at KaMhlushwa. During the arrest police seized several items, among them, three firearms with serial numbers filed off, live ammunition, an undisclosed amount of cash, cellphones, airtime vouchers and dangerous weapons.

Police believe that these suspects may be responsible for a spate of recent house and business robberies perpetrated within the Nkomazi area. The hardest hit being Mzinti near Tonga, where four house robberies were committed within hours on Monday morning, 1 October 2018.
