MPUMALANGA — A major Ermelo crystal meth bust has landed two suspects behind bars after the Hawks intercepted a vehicle loaded with narcotics along one of the province’s busiest transport corridors.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation launched an intelligence-driven operation on Sunday, 19 July 2026, that culminated in the recovery of 310.20 grams of crystal methamphetamine with an estimated street value of R93 060.00.
Multi-Unit Collaboration Leads to Highway Interception
At roughly 17:45, a joint task force comprising the Ermelo K9 Unit, the Secunda Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI), and the Secunda Serious Crime Investigation (SCI) acted on a tip-off regarding a silver old-shape Mercedes-Benz sedan. Intelligence indicated that two occupants were travelling from Volksrust to Ermelo with the intention of collecting illegal drugs.
Officers operationalised the intelligence along the N11 highway between Ermelo and Amersfoort. The targeted vehicle was spotted heading from Ermelo in the direction of Amersfoort and was promptly pulled over for a search.
Methamphetamine Hidden in Vehicle’s Cubby Box
During the roadside search, investigators discovered a packet of crystal meth concealed inside the car’s cubby box. The haul weighed 310.20 grams, marking a significant seizure for the region.
A 44-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman were arrested on the spot for allegedly contravening the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act. Both suspects are expected to appear before the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court in the coming days to face charges of drug possession. The investigation is still active and ongoing.
