Elderly man in court in connection with girlfriend’s murder

An elderly man appeared in the Mbibane Magistrate’s Court on Friday, in connection with the murder of his 45-year-old girlfriend, Mpumalanga police said.

Spokesperson Sergeant Gerald Sedibe said the 84-year-old man allegedly killed his girlfriend on Thursday, at Vaalbank, at around 7.50pm.

“Information at police disposal revealed that the lady friend came to visit the suspect when he went out to buy some cigarettes, leaving the woman alone in the house. When he came back, he discovered that his wallet was missing. He confronted the woman who finally took the wallet out and gave it to him,” Sedibe said in a statement.

“The man allegedly discovered that R500 was missing from the wallet and a fight broke out as a result. It is alleged that he then took a knife and stabbed the woman on her upper body and lower body. Paramedics were called and on their arrival the woman was certified dead at the scene.”

The man was remanded in custody and the case was postponed to December 9, for a bail hearing, Sedibe said.
