Dries Steenkamp, ​​a farmer in his late seventies, was shot on his farm just outside Lydenburg on Thursday 25 January 2018, just after 04:00.

Sgt Gerald Sedibe the provincial police spokesperson told Maroela Media the police were investigating a case of burglary and attempted murder.

Sedibe said Steenkamp was alone on the farm at the time of the incident.

According to him, Steenkamp heard the dogs barking and on investigation encountered three attackers in the house.

“He managed to get to the bedroom and get his own firearm. Shots were fired. We can not confirm at this stage whether the suspects were wounded, “said Sedibe.

The suspects fled the scene and Steenkamp managed to alert one of the workers who got assistance.

Steenkamp was shot three times and was rushed to hospital but unfortunately passed away from his injuries early on Friday morning 26 January 2018.
