MPUMALANGA — A significant Davel dagga arrest has disrupted a suspected cross-border drug trafficking route after authorities intercepted a passenger carrying cannabis with an estimated street value of R30,000. The bust occurred during a routine stop-and-search operation at the N17 Toll Gate, highlighting ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb the illicit narcotics trade moving through the region.

According to a South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, the incident unfolded on Monday afternoon, August 3, 2026. Officers attached to the Visible Policing Section were conducting standard crime-prevention duties when they pulled over a white Toyota Quantum at approximately 15:10.

A police spokesperson confirmed that after obtaining the driver’s consent to search both the vehicle and the passengers’ luggage, officers made a substantial discovery. Hidden inside a green and black travel bag belonging to one of the passengers, authorities found three distinct rolls of suspected cannabis tightly bound in brown adhesive tape. The seized narcotics weighed approximately 4.5 kilograms.

During questioning, the suspect allegedly confessed to the officers that the drugs were purchased in the Kingdom of Eswatini. His intended destination was eMbalenhle, where he planned to offload and sell the illicit cargo for financial profit.

Following the seizure, the individual was taken into custody. A spokesperson for the police noted that the suspect, who claimed to be a foreign national, was entirely unable to produce any valid travel documentation or identification during the arrest.

The suspected cannabis has been secured as evidence, and the accused was detained at the Davel SAPS holding facilities. He is expected to appear before the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court soon, where he will face formal charges of both possession of and suspected dealing in dagga.
