Two truck drivers aged 26 and 36 were arrested for alleged theft of coal at Kendal Power Station near Ogies in the morning of Thursday, 10 November 2022.
Thanks to the collaboration between the security guards and the SAPS members, the two are behind bars and they are set to appear at the Ogies Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 14 November 2022 facing the said charge.
According to the report, the security officials were conducting their duties at Kendal Power Station on Thursday. Information was received indicating that certain truck drivers will be leaving the power station with coal.
The details were followed whereby two trucks were reportedly noticed in the Eskom premises loaded with coal inside the trailers they were pulling instead of carrying ash. The drivers allegedly failed to give account to the load of coal found in their trucks after being asked by the guards hence police had to be called in and an arrest was then made.
The police cannot rule out the possibility of more arrests as it is suspected that the confiscated coals were heading to a certain destination which will probably be revealed as the investigation continues.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has praised security officers who worked smart and in collaboration with SAPS members which culminated into the suspects’ arrest. “We are all feeling the pinch with the load-shedding that is being experienced throughout the country. Having people who allegedly get involved in exacerbating the situation can never be tolerated hence law enforcement agencies will act tough against such individuals without fear or favour,” said the General.
