Police are investigating an attempted cash-in-transit robbery that took place near White River on Thursday, 15 May 2025, after security guards engaged armed suspects in a shootout, leaving one dead and another injured.

According to preliminary reports, an armed group attacked a cash van in an apparent robbery attempt. During the confrontation, security personnel returned fire, forcing the suspects to flee. Two alleged suspects were shot—one died at the scene, while the other was injured and is currently under police guard while receiving medical treatment.

Authorities recovered two rifles at the scene, and the suspects’ alleged getaway vehicle, a Ford Ranger, was later found abandoned in Swalala near Masoyi. Police confirmed that no money was stolen during the failed robbery.

The surviving suspect is expected to appear in court soon as investigations continue. Police have urged anyone with information regarding the outstanding suspects or the incident to contact the South African Police Service (SAPS) or report anonymously via Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or through the MySAPSApp. All information will be treated confidentially.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the security personnel involved, stating that collaborative law enforcement efforts are yielding positive results.

“The swift response and professionalism demonstrated by our security partners during this incident are commendable. Our commitment to ensuring the safety of the community remains unwavering, and we will continue to work tirelessly to bring criminals to justice,” said General Mkhwanazi.

Authorities continue to pursue leads to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the attempted heist.
