The brutal murder of the 52-year-old Gideon Swart on his farm just outside Emgwenya/Waterval Boven in the Emakhazeni Local Municipality (Dullstroom, Emgwenya/Waterval Boven, eMakhazeni, eNtokozweni/Machadodorp) serves as proof that combating rural violence is still not a priority for the authorities.
Swart’s body was discovered on Friday with stab wounds in his back and stomach, and a belt around his ankles. According to a spokesperson for the police, Col Donald Mdluli, a case of murder has been opened and a search for the murderer is underway.
After the incident, the FF Plus sent an urgent request to the MEC for Community Safety, Vusi Shongwe, to prioritise cooperation between the police and rural communities.
It is crucial for the authorities to cooperate closely with farming communities, particularly because these victims usually live in remote areas.
The party also requested that nearby police stations must patrol the farms in their immediate vicinity, not only for the sake of visible policing, but also to frequently check up on farm owners.
Rural safety is right at the top of the party’s priority list of security issues and the party is willing to cooperate with local authorities to ensure the safety of rural communities.
The FF Plus deeply sympathises with the victim’s next of kin during this difficult time.
The party will strive to ensure that his death does not come to nothing.
