The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma has strongly condemned the senseless murder of a 15-year-old girl from Delmas who was found hidden under the bed. The teenager had not been seen by her family since Friday 21 February 2020 and duly reported as missing at Delmas Police Station on Tuesday, 25 February 2020.

However her lifeless body was found under her bed on Wednesday, 26 February 2020. Her 37-year-old uncle has appeared in the Delmas District’s Court on Monday 2 March 2020, after being arrested in connection with the girl’s murder.

The report indicates that on Saturday, 22 February 2020, the family started to get worried as the girl had never been away from home for a long period without contacting them. The family then made efforts to contact her friends enquiring about her whereabouts however all of this did not yield any positive results.

After the girl’s mother was discharged from hospital on Monday, 24 February 2020, she went home and indeed found that her daughter was still missing. The mother grew concerned on Tuesday morning, 25 February 2020, when her relatives started arriving from various places to help search for the girl.

After an extensive search was conducted, one of the family members realised that there was an unusual smell in the house but brushed it off as the house had not been cleaned in a while due to the mother being hospitalised. The girl’s mother started cleaning the house which led to the gruesome discovery of her daughter’s partly decomposed body under the bed.

Strangely, the girl’s uncle who used to stay with them was nowhere to be found, apparently since the girl’s disappearance. A manhunt was conducted and the uncle was found at a particular squatter camp in Delmas and was taken in for questioning by police.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the uncle was previously accused of raping and brutally stabbing another young girl in Gauteng back in 2007.

Details of that case indicate that after stabbing the girl, he (uncle) covered her with blankets but luckily she survived the ordeal. The suspect is yet to be charged for the 2007 case as well. It was further uncovered that the uncle also has a warrant of arrest on an outstanding case which occurred in 2006 where he was found in possession of suspected stolen property.

The uncle has already been charged for the murder of the 15-year-old girl, hence his court appearance on Monday and the case has been postponed to 09 March 2020, for a formal bail application.

The Provincial Commissioner has expressed his disappointment on adults who take advantage and prey on young people instead of caring for them. “Adults, including parents as well as guardians are tasked with the responsibility of looking after children. However, they have now turned into monsters who seemingly harm children. Children are being subjected to gross abuse these days where they are being victimised and killed by people that should protect them. These heinous crimes against children must stop. I urge the Detectives team, the Prosecution Team, as well as the Judiciary to ensure that justice is served in this case and should the man be found guilty, then he must be locked up for a very long time,” said General Zuma.
