An attempted cash-in transit robbery was unsuccessful after suspects staged the robbery on Mngwenya Road towards the N4 Road at Kanyamazane, outside Nelspruit on Friday afternoon, 28 June 2024. Thanks to the astute members who responded swiftly before the mission could be completed.
According to information, a security cash van with security guards, was traveling towards the N4 Road when it was suddenly bumped by a dark brown Mercedes Benz from behind and the cash van lost control as a result.
The security officers were then held at gunpoint by a group of armed suspects before they placed explosive devices on the security van. It is believed that as the suspects were about to bomb the cash van, their mission was interrupted when they realized that the Police were on their way after being alerted about the incident.
It is further reported that the Mercedes-Benz used in this incident, was torched by the suspects before they fled the scene to evade the arrest whilst the men and women in Blue were approaching.
There was no money that was reportedly taken by the suspects and further than that, there was no one reported to have been injured during the said incident.
Various disciplines within the SAPS, including the Hawks and the Explosives Unit and other role players also attended the scene where a case of attempted Cash-In-Transit robbery was registered for investigation with the hope to apprehend perpetrators thereof.
Currently, no one has been arrested as yet and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) / HAWKS will conduct further investigation.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi has indicated that the Police will work around the clock to ensure that the perpetrators are hunted down and swiftly brought to book. “More than a week ago we had a similar incident in the same area of Kanyamazane whereby an attempted Cash-In-Transit robbery occurred then a car used by suspects was torched as well. We are glad that our swift response is assisting like in this instance, it forced suspects to abandon their mission before they could get what they want. We plan to increase our efforts in dealing with this situation because these unwarranted activities have a negative impact on our economy,” said the General.
