On Tuesday, June 7, 32-year-old Piet Mabone of Mookgophong was sentenced to seven years imprisonment on a charge of theft, six years for attempted murder and three years for illegal possession of a firearm. He will serve the prison sentence in Polokwane.
In broad daylight, on Saturday, January 15, Mabone broke into the Swanepoel’s home and broke open the safe. He stole Annaleen’s .38 revolver, laptop, camera, and jewelry. He also helped himself to clothing.
On Monday, January, 18, around 02.30 he broke into the home for the second time and fired a shot at Peter. The bullet hit his hand, Peter returned fire and wounded Mabone in the body and neck.
Mabone used the weapon stolen in the first robbery. Apparently, he entered through the same door he broke during the first robbery. The investigation into the incident revealed that the door was not repaired after the first incident, and the robber wore the clothing stolen from the Swanepoels.
Mabone lived in Polokwane and has now received a sentence fitting the crime. Peter had to undergo surgery on his hand and has made a full recovery. The Swanepoel’s expressed their gratitude and relief over the verdict.
