Four men aged between 26 and 41, are expected to appear at the Kabokweni Magistrates’ Court on 11 July 2019, on charges of possession of firearms and ammunition without licenses. The men were arrested separately in Shabalala and Nyongane, Hazyview respectively, during a police operation which was conducted from the evening of 9 July 2019, to the early hours of this morning 10 July 2019.

The suspects were arrested after police received information about a man who accidentally shot and wounded himself with a firearm. They then went to the said man’s house and coincidentally arrived at the same time as he did, after being discharged from hospital. Police then conducted a search and the firearm, a revolver, was found under a bed, resulting in the arrest of the man and his brother.

A further probe led the police to the houses of the third and fourth suspects after they were informed that they too were allegedly in possession of firearms without license.

Upon arrival at the said residences, they recovered a further two firearms, a revolver and a hunting rifle, one was hidden under a pillow and the other in a hole outside the house.

Police further established that these suspects had been terrorising the Shabalala and Nyongane community and committed various crimes such as business and armed robberies amongst others.
