The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma condemns on a strongest terms the torching of Mavimbela Primary School which occurred at Calcutta in Mkhuhlu near Hazyview on 06 February 2018.

The condemnation by the Provincial Commissioner comes after when police in Calcutta, received a report regarding a school that was on fire. When they arrived at the scene, they found that an administration block as well as the Principal’s office were on fire.

A probe was launched and as a result two women, Grace Mabaso (35) and Margaret Mashaba (59), who are believed to be part of the School Governing Body (SGB) were arrested yesterday.

They have appeared at the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court, at which both were granted R1 000 bail each and the case postponed to 08 March 2018.

The Provincial Commissioner said that it is very disturbing to find SGB members and parents being involved in the torching of schools, violating the Children’s Right to education whilst they are the ones expected to help in sharpening their future.
