The Provincial Commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma applauded the investigating teams around the province for their hard work on sentences secured recently. A number of accused persons were sent to jail for lengthy sentences on different crimes they committed.

A 15 year jail sentence was meted to Jabulani Ntuli for a hijacking that took place sometime in September 2017. The Delmas Regional Court heard on Friday, 19 July 2018, how Ntuli and another man, attacked a motorist after they had been given a lift.

Whilst travelling towards Bronkhorspruit, they requested to alight and when the driver stopped, they hit him with a bottle on the head. The victim tried to reach for his firearm but in vain as it fell out through the window as a result of a scuffle which had ensued.

Another motorist who was passing by witnessed the hijacking then stopped to offer assistance. In the process, the victim managed to come out of his vehicle, grabbed his firearm and fired shots towards his vehicle. Ntuli then jumped to the driver’s seat and sped off with the victim’s vehicle.

The motorist together with the victim gave chase while summoning the police and the vehicle was found abandoned along the road after a while. A search was instituted and it led to the arrest of Ntuli, hence the sentencing.

“We will continue putting effort on any case ensuring that all bad elements are removed from the society. We also hope that these sentences will serve as a deterrent to other would be offenders”, said General Zuma.
