More questions about matric results

Education experts have expressed concern about the 2017 matric results.

More than 802 000 students registered for the exam, but only 651 707 wrote the exam. The statistics of more than 152 000 pupils have not been taken into account when calculating the pass rate.

If this number is taken into account, the pass rate will be closer to 40% instead of the 75% that the Department is ecstatic about.

In conjunction with the recent research report that showed 80% of grade 4 learners could not read correctly, it seems that the education system, like the rest of the country’s structures, is close to junk status.

Meanwhile, Gauteng’s education department is struggling to place another 30 000 pupils for the 2018 academic year.
