The Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Maite Nkoana Mashabane, announced that she will not wait for the constitutional review committee’s report in August before launching land expropriation.

The review committee plans to start its operations in May, but the minister says art. 25 of the country’s constitution already gives her enough space to begin expropriation.

The leader of FF Plus, Dr. Pieter Groenewald says the minister is new to her post and she will find it unnecessary to expropriate land because the state already has more than 4 000 farms that it can use to settle black farmers. “Expropriation is a legal process that will cost the taxpayer a lot of money and the minister will waste money if she wants to expropriate.

“Land that the state has acquired in the land reform program since 1994 as well as land where projects to establish black farmers have failed must first be used to establish the emerging black farmers who want to make a success of their businesses.

“If the minister follows these steps, this expropriation will be totally unnecessary and will save the taxpayers a lot of money,” says Dr. Groenewald.
