The diamond producer and mining company De Beers announced that they undertake to help move the elephant population, which has become too big in South Africa, to Mozambique.

The shift also aims to help grow the elephant population in Mozambique with plans to transfer about 200 animals.

The elephants currently in De Beers’ private reserve will apparently make a positive contribution to the wild population affected by the long standing civil war.

De Beers says the Anglo American reserve of 320 000 hectares currently has 270 elephants while it is only suitable for no more than 100 animals.

The elephants are taken to a reserve in central Mozambique, which is about 1 500 kilometers away from where they are now and will be taken to their new home by road.

About 60 animals will be moved this year, and the rest will only be moved in 2019 when it is ensured that enough space is available to accommodate the elephants.
