Mark Phillips stabbed and bludgeoned to death: Amanzimtoti

THE body of a man who had sustained a fatal stab wound to the neck, was found in his flat in Beach Road, Amanzimtoti on Monday afternoon, 9 June. The victim, Mark Phillip (53) was found seated in front of a television with the volume turned down when police entered the flat.

“His family opened a missing person’s report on Monday, as they had not seen him since Friday, 6 June. They asked police to accompany them to his block of flats, Rusoord, where his body was found,” said Capt Charlene van der Spuy, communications officer at Toti SAPS.

According to Col Jay Naicker of the KZN police media centre, a case of murder is being investigated by Toti SAPS. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage and no arrests have been made.

“His sister contacted him on Friday, 6 June to meet up with him later that evening, but he did not make the appointment. She tried calling him but got no response. On Saturday, 7 June, she visited his flat and left a note under his door for him to contact her,” said Capt Charlene van der Spuy, communications officer at Toti SAPS.

Having still not heard from Phillips on Monday, 9 June, she filed a missing person’s report at Toti police station, as it was unlike him not to reply or respond to messages. It was established, he was last seen by his colleagues on early Friday afternoon.

“The sister asked police to accompany her to her brother’s flat in Beach Road, where he lived alone. On their arrival, they found the burglar gate was locked with a padlock. With assistance from a locksmith, they were able to enter the flat.”
Phillips was found dead in a seated position in front of the television. “His head and face were covered with a tracksuit top and he was covered in blood. A broken baseball bat covered with a towel was found in a basin in the bathroom. It appeared he had been stabbed and hit with the baseball bat.”

His car, a brown Renault Modus, was found abandoned in Newstead Road, Umbilo…
