Man shot in attempted Durban hijacking

Durban – A man is recovering in a Durban hospital after he was shot in a botched hijacking in Botanic Road in Morningside last night.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the man was accosted while seated in his car.

“At about 22:00, a 28-year-old man was shot by three suspects who were attempting to hijack him. It is alleged that the victim was in his vehicle when he was approached by the men who demanded he hand over his car keys,” he said.

“The victim was wounded on the upper thigh and his attackers grappled with him before fleeing the scene with his cellphone and car keys,” Zwane added.

The hijackers were unable to pull the man out of his car and abandoned the theft.

“He was taken to hospital for medical attention. A case of attempted carjacking and attempted murder was opened at Berea SAPS for investigation and no arrests have been made,” he said.

Rescue Care spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, said medics had rushed to the scene of the shooting and found the man in a serious condition.

“We immediately began treatment and the patient was stabilised at the roadside and then transported by ambulance to the Addington Hospital for further urgent care,” he added.
