Man in critical condition after robbers shot him ‘seven times’

A Johannesburg father is in a critical condition after robbers shot him seven times early on Monday morning October 12, 2015.

Gert Havenga, stepfather of André Buitendag (43) told Maroela Media that André works for a security company which transports money in vehicles from specific collection points to banks.

The robbery occurred in Van Buren Street, Bedfordview. André was with a colleague in a vehicle ahead of another vehicle which was transporting the money. The robbers fired at André and his colleague while more robbers took the money from the other vehicle.

Gert reported that André always had his firearm with him but perhaps did not have sufficient time to use it. His colleague managed to get out of the vehicle but André apparently battled with his seatbelt and that is how he got shot.

Gert says the doctor has tried to establish how many bullets are lodged in André’s body and so far the count is 7 – in the arm, stomach, hip and lower back. André is in an induced coma in the Netcare-Union Hospital in Alberton, where he will be kept in the induced coma for 48 hours before his wounds are re-assessed.

André apparently has a 13 year old son who has yet to be told about his father’s injuries. Gert said that it is difficult to tell a child that his father has been shot.

Lieutenant General, Lungele Dlamini, police spokesperson, said that nobody has been arrested but a case of armed robbery and attempted murder has been opened.
