Man dies in hail of bullets at his Pietermaritzburg home

Police are probing the hit-style slaying of a Pietermaritzburg man who was shot and killed at his Bisley home late on Tuesday night.

The man died in a hail of gunfire as he walked from his car to lock the gate at his home in Gilbert Road.

Now police are investigating the motive for the killing, which saw his body riddled with bullets.

A source close to the investigation, who could not be named, said that the man had been nearing his gate when two men, who had been hiding in a roadside ditch, opened fire.

The man was struck by no less than five rounds, and slumped to the ground having sustained gunshot wounds to the head, chest and abdomen.

His keys and car were left untouched.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said that paramedics had received an emergency call and when they arrived, they found the victim lying in a pool of blood.

“Paramedics placed the man on a ventilator and worked fervently trying to resuscitate the critically wounded man for an extensive period. Tragically, despite all their efforts, he was declared dead at the scene,” he said.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that the motive for the killing “remains unclear”.

“A case of murder was opened at Alexandra SAPS for investigation and no arrests have been made,” he said.
