Man charged with brutal Rhodes Park murders

Gauteng police have confirmed that a man brought in for questioning on Friday for the double murder at Rhodes Park in Kensington, Johannesburg, where two men were drowned and a woman raped, has officially been charged.

“A person who was detained for questioning on Friday morning in Yeoville has now been linked to the scene where two men were murdered and a woman raped at Rhodes Park,” Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said on Sunday.

“He will be facing charges of murder, rape and attempted murder when he appears at the Johannesburg Magistrate Court tomorrow [Monday].”

Dlamini said the 24-year-old’s arrest could lead police to bringing in the other alleged members of his gang.

It was reported on Friday that a 24-year-old man was arrested in Yeoville in the early hours of the morning. However, Dlamini at the time said no one had been charged yet.

It has been two weeks since the horrific attack on two couples, who were enjoying a picnic and then a stroll through the Johannesburg park when 12 men accosted them, tied up the two men and raped one of the women.

The gang then drowned both men.
