Man charged with attempted murder

Brits – Fanie van der Westhuizen (54) of Western Transvaal was charged with attempted murder and pointing a firearm on an alleged thief.

Fanie was released on R5 000 bail. According to his statement, unidentified men looted building material from his dam wall on Monday, September 28, 2015 at 11:00.

The security company chased them away as the police did not respond to several calls. About 15:30, an unknown vehicle drove in at his small holdings and dropped off a man at the dam. The man also started looting building material from the dam structure.

Fanie, once again, called the security company and the police, and drove to the dam. The man dropped the bricks when he saw Fanie. The man ran in the direction of Sunway. Fanie chased him in his vehicle and the man fell. Fanie got out, whereupon the man made a movement. Fanie thought he might have a stone or other weapon, fearing for his life he took out his firearm but never aimed the weapon at him.

A worker of Fanie and a neighbour arrived. Meanwhile, Sunway residents walked up and assaulted the suspect, according to Fanie. The police later arrived. Police spoke with the Sunway people and Fanie was arrested for allegedly hitting the man with his vehicle.

According to Fanie the police did not want to inspect his vehicle or take a statement from the neighbour.

The case was postponed to November 2015.
