Man caught with explosives in Waterkloof

A 38-year-old man, believed to be a Zimbabwean national, was caught with explosives in Waterkloof on Thursday, police said.

The explosives are known to be used in ATM bombings.

Captain Pinky Tsinyane, provincial police spokesperson, said the police made the arrest at the McDonald’s restaurant on the corner of Solomon Mahlangu Drive and Cliff Street after they had received a tip-off.

“Information was received that he was travelling from Zimbabwe to deliver explosives to a friend,” Tsinyane said.

“The man was stopped and searched and police found twenty sticks of gel explosives with detonaters hidden in his BMW X3.”

The suspect was taken to the Pretoria Central police station and will appear in court soon.

Tsinyane said the police have not yet linked the man to any ATM bombings and are still looking for his friend.

She added that more arrests are expected as the investigation develops.
