A resident of Pretoria sustained serious injuries after he tried to help an “injured pedestrian” that was lying in a street in Rietfontein.

Bruce Marsh (27) was severely assaulted by four men Sunday September 27, 2015, at about 23:00. Elinda Bosker (25), Marsh’s fiancé, told Maroela Media.

Marsh was on his way home when he saw something lying in the road on 20th Avenue.

“At first he thought it was a child and immediately stopped and ran to help,” Bosker said. The next moment the man in the road jumped up and attacked Marsh with a knife. Three other men came out from the bushes and started beating Marsh.

“He protected himself from the knife attack with his arm and sustained a shallow cut, but the other attackers hit him, kicked, pushed his face into the tarred road and jumped on him,” Bosker said. They tried to take the keys from Marsh, but he clung to it.

“The next moment, a police car drove nearby and the lights flashed over them. The police did not see the attack, but the assailants saw them and ran away,” Bosker said. Marsh succeeded to drive home, where he called his fiancé to take him to hospital.

“Two of his ribs are broken, his elbow is cracked his pelvis completely dislocated and he sustained several bruises on his body,” Bosker said.

Marsh was initially admitted to the Steve Biko Academic Hospital, but dismissed on Monday as they did not have a bed for him. He will be admitted again on Thursday to undergo an operation.

“He’s here at my parents’ house, where we can take care of him,” Bosker said. “He is experiencing intense pain. They gave him pain medication, but it is insufficient.”

According to Bosker, Marsh is very distrustful after the incident. “He will never stop again to help someone. He said one cannot try to help someone in these times. You never know whether you can trust them.”

A case of assault was filed at the police, Bosker said.
