Man arrested for rape in Masiphumelele

A suspect has been arrested for the rape of a woman in Masiphumelele, Cape Town.

The rape had led to unrest in the area, provincial police confirmed on Thursday.

The 34-year-old had been detained for possession of presumed stolen property on Wednesday, and police linked him to the rape of a 24-year-old woman a day later, police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said.

“The arrested suspect, who is from Khayelitsha, is due to make a court appearance on Friday at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court,” she said.

Masiphumelele residents protested on Tuesday and set a police vehicle alight after news of the woman’s rape at the local soccer field spread. News had also spread of a 14-year-old boy who had been raped and murdered.

The body of a 27-year-old man, believed to have been killed in a mob justice attack, was found near the burnt vehicle.

Police are investigating three cases of murder after a man who had been injured during the unrest died in hospital on Wednesday.
