Johannesburg – The majority of police officers murdered in the country this year were killed whilst off duty, statistics issued by the SA Police Service revealed on Saturday.
A total of 58 police officers were killed between January 1 and August 24 2015, SAPS said on its official Twitter page.
Thirty-one of them died outside the line of duty.
A total of 57 police officers had been killed during the same period last year.
Of that number, 34 were killed whilst off duty.
Gauteng once again recorded the highest number of police killings, accounting for 24 of the fatalities.
It was followed by KwaZulu-Natal and then the Eastern Cape province.
The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union last month called for harsh punishment for cop killers.
“These killers need to be dealt with harshly in order to send a message that killing a cop is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” the union said in a statement last month.
A memorial service was expected to be held for the deceased officers at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Sunday.
