The DA leader, Mmusi Maimane, placed the DA in a checkmate position with his suspension of Helen Zille.
According to an internal opinion poll, it is especially the white DA supporters who are angry with Maimane because he suspended Zille and they are threatening to withdraw their future support from the DA.
On the other hand, he raised the unfortunateness of black voters because they want to see Zille kicked out of the party. They also threaten not to support the DA. The EFF, with whom the DA has a principled coalition in the city councils of, among others, Pretoria and Johannesburg, threatens to withdraw from the coalition if Zille is not kicked out and replaced as Western Cape premier.
Apparently, the DA and Zille want a settlement, rather than getting her to a disciplinary hearing and at the risk of losing even more people.
Observers point out that if Maimane had rather ignored Zille’s remarks about colonialism, instead of using it to prosecute Zille, it would have been a day-long storm in a teapot of left-wing media.
