The questions remain unanswered after a mysterious incident that happened on Friday, September 16. A young father from Modimolle, was hijacked near the Codrington off ramp on the N1 highway.

Zak was returning home from a job interview at Lanseria, Johannesburg. It was around 18:30 that evening when Zak Brits, headed back to Modimolle where he lived with his family.

A family member, who requested anonymity, told Die Pos. that traffic suddenly began blocking him and an unknown number of men bumped into Brits’ vehicle. At that stage, nobody knows what actually happened after that.

The family said that eyewitnesses found Brits on the other side of the highway. His left leg was severely injured and he had bruises on his body. Brits could not remember what happened. His vehicle a white Hyundai i20 was missing.

The provincial emergency services, the police, and the community policing forum (CPF) from Bela-Bela and Modimolle were called to assist. Brits was transferred to a Warmbaths Hospital for treatment while a search was launched to find the missing vehicle.

The vehicle was later found near the Springbok Flats area with a damaged headlight, a family member said. The suspects are still at large. On Tuesday, September 20, Brits was transferred to a private hospital in Benoni for an operation to his leg. At that stage, he was still unable to make a statement about the events.

A family member said those close to Brits are incredibly grateful to God that he survived the incident and are particularly grateful to Patrick Selepe and Johann Grobbelaar, the two men who stopped the night he was hijacked and supported him.

The family are also grateful to the Bela-Bela and Modimolle CPF members, Colonel. Lindie Marx station in Bela-Bela, Charles van der Walt, a police reservist, Marthie and Trompie Jonker APA ambulance services who assisted the family until Brits was transferred to Benoni.

The incident is being investigated.
