Jeffrey Chabalala (25) was remanded in custody when he appeared at the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 18 December 2017.

Chabalala has been on the police’s wanted list for a spate of car hijackings in and around Giyani.

Chabalala was arrested on Friday, 15 December 2017 between Hlaneki and Mashavele villages when the police reacted to a tip off from a community member who informed them about a man who was in possession of a firearm.

When the police pounced on the suspect he was found to be the one they were pursuing for some time.

A police firearm with the serial number filed off was found in possession of the suspect. Chabalala has already been positively linked with at least two cases of car hijacking, one during which a firearm was used.

Investigations are underway to establish how Chabalala got hold of the state firearm.

The Cluster Commander of Giyani Major General Mbhazima Ngobeni thanked the community for their continued cooperation and working together with the police.

“This is what we mean by true partnership in the fight against crime. We need the community members to provide us with information and our police must always be of assistance”, Major General Ngobeni said.
