Victim in burnt out vehicle identified, retired SAPS Colonel

The police have, through DNA forensic investigations succeeded in identifying the victim whose remains were discovered in the burnt Mercedes Benz that was parked in the bushes adjacent to the R37 road between Lebowakgomo and Burgersfort.

The victim was found burned beyond recognition.

The deceased has been positively identified as former Colonel Mohlabi Lazarus Tlomatsana who retired on pension from the South African Police Service on 31 August 2007 at the age of 60. He was attached to the National Corporate Communication and Liaison in Pretoria at the time of his retirement.

The gruesome discovery was made by the passerby on Saturday morning 3 February 2018. The police were alerted and reacted swiftly. The victim appeared to have been tied inside the vehicle when it was set alight.

The police have since launched a manhunt for the assailants and nobody was arrested so far. The motive for the incident is unknown at this stage and investigations are continuing.

Meanwhile, the body of a person who was also found burned beyond recognition inside a burnt out Toyota double cap next to Christina village, has not yet been identified. The vehicle belonged to Veronica Mapula Mahanyele who went missing on Monday 5 February 2018. Her body was found on Thursday 8 February 2018 dumped in the bushes next to Newlands village at ga-Mashashane.
