Two suspects, Thato Motau and Terrence Mongadi, appeared before the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 11 July 2025, facing charges related to possession of a suspected hijacked motor vehicle and an unlicensed firearm with ammunition.
Motau, charged with possession of a hijacked vehicle, was remanded in police custody. His case was postponed to Monday, 14 July 2025, for further investigation and a possible bail application. Meanwhile, Mongadi, who faces charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, was granted bail of R1,500.
The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation by the Tubatse tracing team on Saturday, 05 July 2025. Acting on a tip-off about suspicious vehicles in Extension 10, Burgersfort, police arrived at the scene, prompting the suspects to flee, abandoning a white Volkswagen Polo with a Limpopo registration number. Further checks confirmed that the vehicle had been reported hijacked in the Tubatse policing area in June 2025.
Motau was later identified and arrested on Thursday, 10 July 2025, at approximately 11:00 in Burgersfort Extension 10. Mongadi was apprehended the same day at a well-known tavern in Riba Cross for possession of the unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The recovered vehicle and firearm have been confiscated as part of the ongoing investigation.
