LIMPOPO — The Polokwane High Court has handed down life imprisonment sentences to two men convicted of the gruesome Waterberg District murder of 43-year-old Hendrik Stephanus Venter. The definitive sentencing brings an end to a complex case that began as a missing person inquiry and evolved into a major forensic investigation.

The proceedings stem from a missing person report initially opened at the Northam police station on 20 August 2021. It was not until July 2022 that investigators confirmed the missing 43-year-old had been murdered. Evidence revealed the victim was dismembered and burned, with his remains ultimately discarded along the De Put gravel road within the Northam policing area. Following this discovery, a murder docket was officially opened and arrest warrants were issued.

The investigation led to the arrest of 38-year-old Gareth Alexander Potgieter in Bloemfontein in the Free State province, who was subsequently transferred to Northam police. The second accused, 38-year-old Wynand Carel Steyn, was already in police custody at the time regarding an unrelated copper-related theft case. From the beginning of the proceedings, Captain Piet Du Plessis of the Northam Detectives Unit successfully opposed bail for both men, keeping them in custody until sentencing.

The state’s case was bolstered by meticulous forensic recovery. Investigators recovered human ribs, vertebrae, and the deceased’s ring. Additionally, a sink basin containing the victim’s DNA was seized, alongside a saw, an axe, and an electric wood saw.

The matter was transferred to the Polokwane High Court for trial. On Friday, 06 November 2026, both accused were found guilty and sentenced on two primary counts:
Count 1 (Murder): Life imprisonment.
Count 2 (Defeating the ends of justice): 5 years imprisonment.

The court ordered that both sentences will run concurrently.

Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, publicly welcomed the conviction and sentencing. He stated that justice has been properly served and that the victim’s family has finally achieved closure. Lieutenant General Scheepers also specifically commended Captain Du Plessis for his meticulous and dedicated work throughout the investigation.
