Two die in Nylstroom hospital fire: FF Plus calls for decisive action

The FF Plus in Limpopo is calling on the province’s MEC for Health, Phophi Ramatuba, to take decisive action and address the dire state of affairs at hospitals in the province after a fire broke out at the FH Odendaal Hospital in Modimolle (Nylstroom), resulting in the death of two people.

The province’s Department of Health must be held accountable for the poor management, inadequate infrastructure and associated safety risks present at most of the public hospitals in the province.

The FF Plus sent an official letter to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) regarding the incident to add to the complaint about the general state of affairs at provincial hospitals that the party recently lodged. It is unacceptable that fires are breaking out in hospitals where sick people are already fighting for survival.

Incidents like these seriously undermine communities’ faith in the public healthcare system. It also puts a lot of pressure on the Department to get the necessary precautionary measures and emergency plans in place at hospitals in the province so as to prevent any future tragedies.

The FF Plus herewith also expresses its condolences to the next of kin of the victims who died in the fire.
