A suspect arrested in connection with a farm attack in August 2017, during which a farmer of the Groblersdal area in Limpopo died, was earlier this month shot dead in the same area during a second farm attack.

Thomas Baloyi, 24, died when he was shot on a farm in Kalkfontein outside Groblersdal on 6 February 2018.

Maroela Media reported earlier Wilma Liebenberg was alone at home when the dogs started barking at her in the bedroom around 23:30. Liebenberg got up to investigate and saw a light burning in the passage on the top floor of the house. She then fired two shots with a revolver out of the bedroom window. According to her husband, Kobus Liebenberg, she heard how somebody walked down the stairs and started to bash on the room door. Liebenberg then fired shots through the door.

The attackers, apparently four of them, then ran out of the house and helped their injured mate out of the house and over the wall before leaving him there. Because there is no signal on the farm, Liebenberg waited until it got light before she left the house and called the police.

Kobus said earlier to Maroela Media that the police’s dog unit arrived at the scene at about 12:00 and found the attacker alive in the field. He was injured in the chest just below the shoulder. The attacker died later on the farm.

Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe the police spokesperson has in the meantime confirmed to Maroela Media that this attacker is Thomas Baloyi.

Baloyi was arrested last year with three other suspects in connection with the murder of Herman Botha (64). Maroela Media previously reported that Botha and his son were robbed by a group of attackers on August 6, 2017 when they arrived at home during the morning. Botha’s wife, daughter in law and her children apparently arrived at home shortly thereafter and were also attacked and tied up by the attackers.

The attackers robbed a number of firearms and a Toyota Etios before they fled.

Kobus Hildebrandt, deputy chairman of the rural safety group in Groblersdal, told Maroela Media at the time that an ambulance was called to provide medical assistance to Botha and he was then taken to a nearby rugby field from which an emergency helicopter would take him to a hospital. However, he died before being taken to hospital. It is suspected that he had a heart attack.

Moyo, Makwaka and Langa will appear in court again on April 9.

Ngoepe confirmed Baloyi, Tobias Moyo (44), Fanie Makwaka (25) and Chris Langa (31) were later arrested in connection with the attack. Ngoepe confirmed that the suspect was arrested for this previous farm attack where the farmer had died. They appeared in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on November 29, 2017, where they were released on bail of R1000 each.
