Tender fraud: Limpopo prosecutor, site manager, administrator and 14 ghost workers arrested

The FF Plus welcomes The Hawks’ arrest of a Limpopo prosecutor, site manager, administrator and 14 ghost workers for alleged tender fraud in the Makhado Local Municipality.

In 2016 and 2021, Limpopo’s Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) awarded a tender to the NGO Thembalethu for cleaning the Makhado area.

The site manager and administrator allegedly recruited friends and family members as employees from a community-worker programme.

The workers were not even seen in Makhado, but received a monthly payment of R2 450, of which R1 500 had to be paid back to Thembalethu.

With the tender, COGTA suffered damages amounting to R900 000, while Makhado (Louis Trichardt) still looks like an illegal dumping site.

Although these arrests are but a drop in the ocean, it does offer some hope that decisive action will be taken against officials and other persons guilty of corruption.
